What Was His Life Like? Alexander the Great’s life was short lived, however, he lived his life to the fullest. He was born in Pella, 356 BC, and was tutored by the philosopher, Aristotle. Alexander’s education with Aristotle, took place in the Temple of the Nymphs, in Melza. This continued for three years, until he completed his education that consisted of politics, philosophy, poetry, and science. Throughout his life, he was recognized as a noble, and because of it, was a narcissist. In fact Alexander the Great had over 70 cities named after him. The first time that Alexander did this was when he was 16, when his father, Philip II, left the country for a conference. In order to fill his position while he was gone, he put Alexander in charge of running the country. Alexander immediately took advantage of this, and took over a foreign nation, in which he named it “Alexandroupolis”. Also around this time, Alexander's father, Philip II was assassinated in 336 B.C. while celebrating the wedding of his daughter Cleopatra. Upon his father’s death, Alexander moved quickly to gain power, and so, gained support of the Macedonian Army, and took down the rebelling Greek city-state Thebes.
